Honglin HU (hlhu@ieee.org) received his PhD degree in communications and information system in Jan. 2004, from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Then, he was with Future Radio, Siemens AG Communications in Munich, Germany. In Jan. 2006, he joined Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, serving as an Associate Professor (2006-2008) and full Professor (since Jan. 2009). Also, since 2013, he serves as an adjunct professor at ShanghaiTech University. Since Jan. 2016, he joined Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences, serving as a full professor and the director of Smart ICT Center at SARI. Since Sept. 2025, he joined ShanghaiTech University. He was a Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro) at VTT, Finland (2015-2018).

 

He is a member of steering group for national 863 Hi-Tech major project “Spectrum sharing wireless communication systems”. Moreover, he is a technical expert in the Chinese delegation at ITU-R. He has been sponsored by Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), national 863 Hi-Tech program from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), national key technology program from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and many industry partners such as Nokia, Huawei, ZTE and ChinaMobile. Also, he led many international collaboration projects with European and North American partners. For example, he acted as the coordinating co-chair for the Sino-Finnish ICT Alliance.

 

He has been granted over 30 Chinese or US patents, and has co-authored over 100 international journal papers. He has contributed more than 20 standardization proposals to 3GPP and ITU, among which 3 has been accepted and published in ITU R-REP-M.2225 (Introduction to cognitive radio systems in the land mobile service). Moreover, he has co-edited 5 technical books for Springer Publisher and the CRC Press, Taylor & Francis LLC, USA, among which 3 have been translated into Chinese as well, and 1 book on 3GPP LTE in Chinese published by Publishing House of Electronics Industry (PHEI).

 

He is a senior member of IEEE and was the Vice Chair of IEEE Shanghai Section (2008-2018). In addition, he served as a member of Technical Program Committee and co-chair for many international conferences, such as IEEE ICC and IEEE GlobeCom. He served or is serving as an editor for international journals such as IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Wireless Communications, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, International Journal of Communication Systems. He was the leading guest editor for 6 special issues in IEEE Wireless Communications and IEEE Communications Magazine, such as “Mobile Converged Networks”, “Software Defined Wireless Networks” (Part I and Part II), and “5G Testing and Field Trial”. He received 2016 IEEE Jack Neubauer Memorial Award (the best paper award of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology) and the best paper award of IEEE GlobeCom 2016.
