Photoacoustic microscopy: Technology development and applications

Abstract:

Photoacoustic imaging is an emerging modality that shows great potential for clinical research from organelles to organs. Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is renowned for the high-contrast high-resolution in vivo imaging. Similar to ultrasound imaging, PAM requires the use of coupling agents to facilitate acoustic coupling. We explored non-contact PAM based on photoacoustic remote sensing. This technique can help the development and applications including PA ophthalmology, multi-modal optical imaging, photoacoustic endoscopy, and label-free histology. Besides, to enhance PAM image quality, we proposed improved PAM algorithms for synthetic aperture focusing technique, deconvolution, and sparse image recovery. Conventional signal and image processing as well as the emerging deep learning were employed. On the other hand, PAM has various potential biomedical applications. We demonstrated PAM can be a useful tool for monitoring sepsis disease, cell tracing when nanoparticles as contrast agents are used, and studying zebrafish disorder models. PAM imaging of lithium metal batteries was also explored to study the dendrite growth, which may provide insight into the safety and lifetime issues of batteries.

Bio:
Sung-Liang Chen is an Associate Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (optics) from the University of Michigan and post-doctoral training at the University of Michigan Medical School. Then, he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2013) as a principle investigator. His research area is optical imaging with focus on photoacoustic imaging technologies and applications. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals including Nature Photonics, Analytical Chemistry, Photoacoustics, and Optics Letters. He was a recipient of the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Award (2014) and the National Talents Program for young professionals (2015).
