On December 16, the Huawei Cup fourteenth China Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest (CPMCM) in Modeling award ceremony was successfully held in Xi'an Jiaotong University. Our school has a total of seven teams winning the awards, including one first prize award, two second prizes, three third prizes and one successful participation award. Among them, the team composed of three SIST students (Yaojiang Chen, Xiaoying Lu and Xiaoyang Liu) won the first prize in the competition and held the Huawei Cup at the same time (a total of ten teams nationwide).

Hosted by China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC), organized by Xi'an Jiaotong University, and sponsored by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Le Pu (Beijing) Medical Devices Co. Ltd., CPMCM aims to explore the ability of postgraduates to solve practical problems in mathematics, cultivate first-class talents, as well as contribute innovation to the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics. A total of 437 postgraduate cultivation units participated in the competition. 10,468 teams successfully submitted the thesis. And finally 10 Huawei Special Awards, 150 first prizes, 1,383 second prizes, 2,085 third prizes and 6,697 successful participation awards were awarded at this competition. It is worth mentioning that CPMCM also attracted the participation of a number of overseas university students.

CPMCM requires the participating graduate students to solve a practical problem in four days and complete the work from developing a mathematical model, solving the problem, improving the model, to writing an essay. Contest topics covered the optimization and application of UAVs in disaster relief, VCSEL laser simulation models for the next generation of optical communications, flight recovery issues, foreground target extraction based on surveillance video, programming issues in multi-mission missile launching and construction of underground Logistics system network. These questions originate from academic frontiers and major national defense and economic issues. Compared to previous sessions, the competition topics of this year are more broad, practical, challenging and innovative, and are suitable for graduate students of different professional backgrounds.

Our graduate team selected Problem B. This question focused on the VCSEL laser model. Captain Yaojiang Chen said that VCSEL laser is a very hot research field of optoelectronics, and is becoming the cornerstone of future optical communications systems. When studying practical problems, they did not deliberately pursue the complexity and novelty of the model. Instead, they focused on the accurate and thorough understanding of the physical nature of the laser and given future thought to the limitations of the methods they used to obtain more reasonable results. For example, in solving the first quiz, they just used a simple non-linear least-squares method to solve. But they worked hard on data preprocessing. Yaojiang also advised that Mathematical modeling required us to have a solid foundation of knowledge to understand the nature of the problem in depth and to promote innovation and progress in the light of actual needs, just like our usual scientific research. Xiaoying Lu also mentioned,” These four days of the competition were very challenging and fulfilling. We consulted lots of literatures about the VCSEL laser design and cited some of the experimental data to support the rationality of our own model. At the moment of submitting the final paper, we were confident of winning an award, but it is quite a surprise to receive Huawei Special Award.”

The team wants to thank Prof. Baile Chen, Prof. Haoyu Wang and Prof. Xufeng Kou for the great academic supervision, and thank Prof. Ziyu Shao for the great training seminar of mathematical modeling contest. The solid academic background, rigorous attitude of scholarship and distinguished vision of SIST faculties encourage all the students to be truthful and practical in academic research. Mathematical modeling contest is just like a small research project, which is a good academic training for the graduate students. It also becomes an important platform for enterprises to promote corporate culture and find high-level innovative talents.
