Between March 31st and April 4th 2017 RoboCup China [1] was held in Rizhao, Shandong. A team of five students of ShanghaiTech University and Prof. Sören Schwertfeger [2] participated in the RoboCup Rescue league. The team was comprised of graduate students of the ShanghaiTech Automation and Robotics Lab [3] and is thus called “STAR Rescue”.
In the competition the very early prototype of a small and cheap rescue robot was tested. It is using a smartphone as the main computation, sensing and communication unit, which is directly connected to four smart servo motors for locomotion. The team achieved all its goals: Learn about RoboCup Rescue, thoroughly test the robot, score more than 0 points and have fun. It was lots of work but lead to very nice progress on the STAR Rescue project. See more pictures and a video at: https://robotics.shanghaitech.edu.cn/node/147
