Recently, the FPGA Maker winter camp was hold by Digilent at Hefei University of Technology. GeekPie and the other two SIST undergraduates attended the camp.
The winter camp gathered the attendees from undergraduates to Ph.D Students from Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and other universities. The attendees were required to build a self-balancing car based on Digilent basys3 FPGA board. The main difficulties of the assignment were the operation of the FPGA board, the construction of the hardware circuit of the vehicle and the understanding of the PID algorithm.
In the activity, the two undergraduate students solved their problems by continuous practicing and consulting the engineers and other campers. Although they were in a relative backwardness situation at the beginning, they found a new cooperation strategy: the junior student Yunchen Yang was responsible for the code and Chengwei Han, the freshman, worked on the PCB board and other hardware. After a whole night’s hard working, they got ahead of other groups to complete the body of balanced car and eventually won the honor of the top ten campers with excellent works.

This semester, GeekPie will cooperate with Digilent to set up a FPGA Makerspace, providing comprehensive FPGA training and equipment support to the members. The winter camp definitely provided valuable experience for the establishment of the new Makerspace.
