Abstract:

Nowadays, most of the Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile computing devices are powered by chemical batteries. However, the energy capacity of batteries is limited, after all. The finite energy capacity severely limits the lifetime and deployment space of IoT systems. The energy harvesting technologies enable the IoT devices to feed themselves by scavenging power in different physical forms from the ambiance. Compared with solar, thermal, and radio frequency (RF) energy, vibration energy is not limited by illumination, temperature, and space. But its energy distribution is more sparse; its power density is lower. And the design and optimization of vibration energy harvesting systems require a joint effort from many related disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science.

This talk will first introduce ViPSN: a vibration-powered sensing node as a programmable IoT platform for battery-free sensing and transmitting. Then we will show the ViPSN expansions ViPSN-E and ViPSN-Cam, which can be deployed in the real world. ViPSN-E, a transient motion-powered ubiquitous sensing node; ViPSN-Cam, a vibration-powered camera based on cyber-electromechanical synergy.
