Abstract:

This talk consists of 2 parts. Presented in Part-I is a general overview of some of the important issues in phased array design. It includes a brief discussion on (1) beamforming, (2) DOA (direction of arrival) estimation, (3) element-separation to wavelength ratio, (4) Fisher information, and (5) Frecher-Darmois-Cramer-Rao lower bound. An example of DOA estimation using maximum entropy method vs Dolph-Chebyshev beamformer is presented. Presented in Part-II is Part-I of a 3-part series on detail discussions of classical beamformer design. It covers step-by-step derivations of the radiation properties of an array with directivity plots. Important properties including (a) beam-width, (b) zero-locations, (c) sidelobe magnitudes and (d) sidelobe-peak locations of the uniform array are derived and discussed in detail.
