Ophthalmic optical coherence tomography angiography: from imaging perspective

Abstract:

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an emerging function modality of OCT. It can resolve 3-dimensional vasculature and blood flow information of human eye. Compared with traditional fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography, OCTA does not require dye injection that brings convenience and flexibility to research and clinical applications in ophthalmology. It also can separate vessels and capillaries locating at superficial plexus, deep plexus, and choroid with the axial resolution of few microns. In the last five years, it has drawn tremendous interests and shown superiority in the early detection and diagnosis of prevailing ocular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. In this talk, I will introduce our recent progress in developing advanced OCTA imaging devices and data/image processing algorithms. The applications of the developed devices/algorithms in imaging and quantifying the pathological and vascular changes of posterior segment will be further demonstrated.

Bio:

Jianlong Yang is an associate professor at Cixi Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his B.S. degree in applied physics from East China University of Science and Technology in 2010 and received his Ph.D. degree in optical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2015. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as a postdoc researcher at the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers at Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University, which is led by Prof. David Huang, the co-inventor of OCT and OCTA. His research interests include ophthalmic OCT/OCTA imaging, medical image processing and analysis using machine learning, and optical fiber lasers. He has published more than 30 papers in top-tier international journals and conferences such as JAMA Ophthalmology, Journal of Biophotonics, and Biomedical Optics Express. He also has applied more than 20 Chinese and US invention patents. 7 of them have been licensed. Dr. Yang developed the world's first handheld OCTA system in 2017 and has been used in the screening and diagnosis of pediatric ocular diseases, such as retinopathy of prematurity and incontinentia pigmenti.
