ShanghaiTech University Hosting 2012 FIST-2012 International Workshop

ShanghaiTech University recently hosted a highly successful 2012 Frontiers of Information Science and Technology (FIST-2012) Workshop. FIST-2012 took place from December 9-13, 2012 at Parkyard Hotel, Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. This high-level international workshop is initiated and organized by the School of Information Science and Technology. FIST-2012 workshop is one of a series of technical events during the inauguration of ShanghaiTech University.

FIST-2012 invited over 60 major speakers from around the world, a large number of which are world-class senior researchers, professors and industrial experts. Focusing on the future development of scientific research and education in information science and technology, these distinguished speakers presented their recent exciting research findings, discussed important technological progresses, and articulated their visions on future research directions. More than 200 workshop participants took part in this unprecedented meeting of world class IT experts, covering a wide spectrum of frontier topics from big data, computer vision, to sub-millimeter wave imaging. FIST-2012 also invited Professor David Tse of UC Berkeley and IBM’s Dr. David Carmel to deliver two plenary lectures titled “The Science of Information: from Communications to DNA Sequencing” and “IBM Watson and the Jeopardy Challenge”, respectively. The plenary lectures stimulated a high level of attention and exciting discussions among workshop participants.


Dr. Mianheng Jiang, President of CAS Shanghai Branch, delivered the opening lecture titled “Urbanization, Industrialization, and Informationization” during the opening ceremony. Following the progress and modernization of society through, urbanization, industrialization, and the recent informationization, Dr. Jiang delineated the general development trend of society through information revolution and globalization. He further emphasized the necessity, importance, and urgency for China and China’s education system to break through traps and stagnation experienced earlier by nations in similar stage of development and modernization. Dr. Jiang introduced the inauguration of ShanghaiTech University as the government’s response and commitment to confront these difficult challenges.


Prof. Jie Yin, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, presented the founding principles, the planning, and the current progress of ShanghaiTech University in his major speech on behalf of the ShanghaiTech University Steering Committee.


Prof. Zhi Ding of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) served as the chair of the workshop and the opening ceremony. On behalf of Dean Cher Wang and the SIST team, he articulated the founding principles and future plan of SIST in his talk. Prof. Ding also presented the preparation and progress of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) to the workshop participants.
Among the distinguished guests at the workshop are Renchang Hua, Vice President of ShanghaiTech Executive Committee, Cher Wang, Member of ShanghaiTech Executive Committee and Dean of SIST, Zhihe Rao, Member of ShanghaiTech Executive Committee and Dean from School of Life Science and Technology, Yang Yang, Vice Dean of SIST, Hong Li, Vice Dean from School of Entrepreneurship and Management as well as Wenchi Chen, CEO of ViaTech.
