Research on Single-ended Fault Location Methods for Transmission Line

High voltage long-distance power transmissions are widely used in the modern power grid to meet the growing demand for electrical energy. However, transmission line faults may occur due to factors such as line aging or external forces. Fault location approaches typically analyze line voltage and current measurements before and during faults, to identify the fault point within the line of interest. Accurate and fast fault location technology can reduce the time searching for faults, save labor costs, and ensure the reliability of the power supply.

Fault analysis methods construct location equations, including measurements, system parameters and fault distance, according to the equivalent model of the system. By solving the equations, the fault distance can be estimated. Fault analysis methods can be classified into dual-ended methods and single-ended methods. Dual-ended methods usually require communication and synchronization techniques, which may not be available in practical systems. Single-ended methods only uses local data and are not affected by communication and synchronization.

In this talk, single-end fault location methods suitable for AC transmission lines are introduced. The proposed methods consider the influence of distributed parameters. Compared with the existing single-ended fault location methods, the proposed methods can achieve more accurate fault location results.

He is currently working towards the M.S. in Electronics Science and Technology in ShanghaiTech University. His research interests include transmission line fault location and line modeling.
