J. C. Cao received his PhD in electrical engineering from Southeast University (Nanjing, China) in 1994. Dr. Cao’s major research interest is terahertz semiconductor devices and their applications in communication and imaging. He is currently the Terahertz Opto-Electronics Group Leader of Key Laboratory of Terahertz Solid-State Technology, Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Acdemy of Sciences. From 1999 to 2000, he was a Senior Visiting Scientist at the National Research Council, Ottawa, ON, Canada. 
Dr. Cao received the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China and the Natural Science Award of Shanghai (the Peony Award) in 2004. He got the Excellent Teacher Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences twice, in 2006 and in 2011.
