The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Computing Lab (UAV-CL) was set up in April 2016 by assistant professor Xiaopei Liu from the School of Information Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University. The goal of the lab is to develop safe and extensible computing system as well as intelligent control and navigation algorithms for unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, the lab also studies aerodynamic design philosophy from computational fluid dynamics and visual analysis for the structure and shape design of the vehicles.

Unmanned aerial vehicles or drones are currently seen wide-spread use in different scenarios, from personal recreation to various industrial applications, where aerial data collection is demanding. UAV-CL explores multi-disciplinary research from mechanical, electronic and software system engineering, to control, vision and learning algorithms, with the aim to build practical intelligent and safe flying platform for many automatic aerial tasks, including different kinds of automatic VR/AR aerial photography.
