Distributed Congestion-Aware Load Balancing in Data Center Networks

Speaker: Hong Xu

Time: Aug 25, 4:30pm - 5:30pm.

Location: Room 410, Teaching Center

Abstract:

Load balancing in modern data center networks is crucial to performance of applications with stringent requirements on both latency and throughput. In this talk, I will present our work on congestion-aware load balancing to address the inefficiency of current solutions. First I will introduce Expeditus, a distributed balancing protocol for general Clos data center networks. Expeditus relies on simple local information collection and a novel two-stage path selection mechanism to make near-optimal path selection decisions. Testbed evaluation on Emulab with Click implementation and large-scale ns-3 simulations demonstrate that Expeditus outperforms CONGA and ECMP. In the second part, I will introduce Luopan which can perform congestion-aware load balancing in any topologies, by utilizing random sampling.
