The geometry of Einstein’s equations

Abstract:

When Einstein introduced his famous “field equations” in 1915 his motivation was purely physical: to describe the curvature of space-time. In my talk I will describe a much more recent mathematical application of Einstein’s equations, namely the classification of geometric spaces. I will describe the field equations in non-technical language and then explain how they can be used to prove results in mathematics. The most spectacular success of the use of Einstein’s equations in this way is the proof of the Poincaré conjecture. This was achieved by Grigory Perelman in 2003, one hundred years after the conjecture was formulated by Henri Poincaré. I will give a non-technical overview of Perelman’s proof. If time remains, I will explain the challenges which still lie ahead in applying Einstein’s equations to other problems in geometry.
